What to expect
What to Expect: Your First Appointment with Northern Neuro Physio
Welcoming a healthcare professional into your home is a big step, and we want you to feel completely comfortable and prepared for our first visit. Your initial consultation is all about getting to know you, understanding your unique environment, and laying the groundwork for your rehabilitation journey.
Because neurological and mobility assessments are comprehensive, please allow 60 to 90 minutes for this first visit.
1. How to Prepare You don't need to do any special preparation or cleaning before we arrive! To help us get the most out of our time together, it is helpful if you have the following ready:
Comfortable Clothing: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, along with your usual supportive, enclosed footwear.
Medical Documents: Any relevant hospital discharge summaries, brain/spine scan results (MRI/CT), or specialist letters.
Medication List: A current list of your prescribed medications.
Your Mobility Aids: If you currently use a walking stick, frame, wheelchair, or orthotics, please have them nearby.
Family or Carers: You are highly encouraged to have a family member, carer, or loved one present during the appointment if it makes you more comfortable or if they assist with your daily care.
2. The Conversation (Understanding Your Journey) Before we do any physical moving, we will sit down for a chat. We want to hear your story in your own words. We will discuss your medical history, your current symptoms, how your condition affects your day-to-day life, and any specific challenges you are facing at home.
3. The Physical Assessment (Moving Safely) Next, we will complete a physical assessment tailored specifically to your needs. Depending on your condition, this might involve looking at:
Your strength, flexibility, and coordination.
Your balance and walking (gait) both indoors and outdoors.
Specific neurological tests, or vestibular assessments if you are experiencing dizziness or vertigo.
How you navigate your actual home environment (like getting in and out of your favorite chair or bed, or managing steps). We will only do what you are comfortable with, and your safety and comfort are always our first priority.
4. Collaborative Goal Setting The most important part of our first session is figuring out what matters most to you. We don't just set clinical goals; we set life goals. Whether your aim is to safely walk to the mailbox, get back into the garden, reduce your risk of falling, or improve your independence with daily tasks, we will design a personalized treatment plan to help you get there.
At the end of the session, we will discuss our recommended plan, outline what future sessions will look like, and answer any questions you or your family might have.
